Brownsville sits near Memphis and lies close to Nutbush, the town where Turner grew up and went to school. Today, the statue stands near the high school where the singer once walked to class. This link ties the icon to her beginnings.
Sculptor Fred Ajanogha made the statue. He molded it to show Turner in mid-performance. Her wild hair is captured in a crisp style, and her hand holds the microphone with a firm grip. Ajanogha focused on showing her stage force and bold energy. The strong pose and tall form give the sculpture personal power.
Turner’s work and life mixed joy with hard times. In the ‘60s and ‘70s, she made music with her husband Ike. The statue now stands by the West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center’s Tina Turner museum in Brownsville. The museum sits in the old Flagg Grove School, the one-room place where Turner once studied. The site was moved from Nutbush and fixed up after long years of neglect.
